I first started playing brass instruments when I was at school. I was 11 at the time and was very interested in taking up the trumpet. Back then, I lived near Aberdeen and the Primary School I attended did not offer brass tuition so my parents agreed to pay for me to have private lessons from a Charles Foster. However, when I started at Secondary school in 1989, I was then able to get brass tuition during school time from the late Stewart Watson who was probably best known for founding the Aberdeen-based Bon-Accord Brass Band. He felt that I did not have the right lip for trumpet so I eventually settled on Euphonium. After his retirement, I then had the privilege of being taught by David James who made me into the player I am today. During my time at school, I had the opportunity to play for the Aberdeen schools brass band where I was principal Euph., three years running and did quite well as a soloist too. Since, I left school I continued to help out Bon-Accord until I moved down to Edinburgh where I joined Penicuik Silver in March 2003. I left them in January 2007 to settle here in Bathgate where as well as play Euphonium, I hold the position of treasurer within the band.
